Seeing him so happy...it wrenches my heart to know that smile will soon cease to be.Why couldnt u have altered the story to make him live,even if the original novel wrote him off?Didnt disney rewrite the little mermaid so ariel didnt need to die,or turn to sea foam? You could have written him to enter a comatose state for 5 years,after which he finally awoke,not having aged a single day.Then once he's well enough he accompanied his grandad to look for his granny's soul.This will ensure most of your panels are retained,just the portion on the funeral needs to be erased or changed to represent sth else,and just the dialogue to be changed,from dead to comatose.Also,i think u need to mention the director,his assistant and scientist be arrested and put behind bars,they cannot hurt such a dear boy without facing the consequences.
